Stewpot delays closing shelters to January 7

On Tuesday, the Board of Directors of Stewpot voted today to delay the closing date of its Matt's Emergency Shelter for Women and Children and the Brumfield Emergency Shelter for Men until January 7, 2015.

According to the Executive Director for Stewpot, Rev. Frank Spencer, the extension was made possible by a $17,000 donation from a group of business men, who wished to remain anonymous, and the effort by Mac Epps of Mississippi MOVE and the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity this past weekend.

These groups slept in Poindexter Park to raise awareness of the homeless issue and also to raise additional funds to support the shelters.

On Monday, checks totaling more than $55,000.00 were presented to Stewpot Community Services.

The Century Club Charities collected $27,500.00 during a Sunday service at the Sanderson Farms PGA Tour Championship; money matched by the poultry company.

Following that presentation, Spencer attended a Special Jackson City council meeting where the city pledged $38,000.00 from the general fund.

That is in addition to the $35,000 it has already contributed to the Stewpot's Opportunity Center.

But Stewpot officials want permanent funding of $100,000 each from the city and county.

Spencer says Stewpot is half a million dollars behind in revenue collection for the year and recent donations have not allowed them to catch up on outstanding bills and repay $60,000.00 borrowed to cover staff salaries.
