Mississippi State #25 in new AP women's hoops poll
NEW YORK (AP) - South Carolina takes over as the new No. 1 in The Associated Press women's basketball poll for the first time in school history.
The Gamecocks received 21 first-place votes Monday edging Notre Dame for the top spot. Dawn Staley's team is headed to the Bahamas to play in the Junkanoo Jam over Thanksgiving where they will face Wisconsin in their first game as No. 1 on Thursday.
The Irish garnered 12 first-place ballots and moved up to second. UConn, which held the top spot for 22 straight weeks, drops to third after losing in overtime at Stanford last Monday. Tennessee and the Cardinal round out the first five.
No. 25 Mississippi State entered the poll for the first time since Nov. 23, 2009, while Gonzaga fell out.
