JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Tests show that Kayu, the baby orangutan that died at the Jackson Zoo in October, died from complications of an acute bacterial pneumonia. The Zoo's veterinarian, Dr. Holifield, says there are multiple causes that led to developing the pneumonia.

“An aspiration event in an infant can be associated with routine nursing, spitting up, and can even be associated with illnesses such as heart disease,” said Dr. Holifield.

The initial tests had shown there was trouble with the heart functioning properly. There were no external signs of harm or stress to the infant before the passing.

Kayu's mother, Sabah, appears to be doing well and has reunited with the father, Pumpkin. She has been reintroduced to her pre-baby routine and enjoys spending most days outside with Pumpkin. The zoo hopes to breed the pair again in the future.
