Sweet potato queen gives thanks to YMCA

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - It was packed inside of the downtown YMCA Friday morning for the 46th annual YMCA Thanksgiving Prayer Breakfast.

After the meal and socializing, guests enjoyed a couple of selections from vocalist James Martin. During the program several people were honored for their service to the YMCA and the community. This year's guest speaker was the Sweet Potato Queen herself, Jill Conner Browne, who started teaching aerobics at the Y in the 1970's. During her talk Browne rekindled some old memories. She's also encouraging everyone to get on board with a national initiative the Y is supporting, called "Giving Tuesday."  On December 2nd everybody is encouraged to give back.

"We cannot depend on the government there is no they, they are not going to come and do anything for us, there's only us it's our community and we have to make it be the way we want it to be and it has to be good for everybody,
said Browne.

Through Giving Tuesday, the YMCA hopes donors will contribute $200,000 to the Y's annual support campaign.
