JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Literacy is making a big impact on students across the state. It's a competition thousands of students have been competing in and it's all about reading.

"Congratulations Kimberly Wilson you have won five hundred dollars," said Joyce Helmick.

Two were surprised as the Mississippi Association of Educators announced they were amongst the winners of the Read Your Way To The Egg Bowl contest.

"It's pretty amazing," said Wilson. "I was very shocked and was not expecting it at all."

In conjunction with the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State, MAE President Joyce Helmick says thousands of students across the state participated in the reading competition.

"We sent out this contest and encouraged teachers to get their students to read," said Helmick. "The students had to read at least six books."

Those names were then sent in and a random drawing was done out of fifteen thousand names.

Clinton Eastside Elementary School 5th grade Science teacher Kimberly Wilson won five hundred dollars to spend on her students, but she says the most important part is instilling literacy with them.

"Literacy of course is important to gain knowledge and to grow in education," said Wilson. "I just find it very important for them to be able to comprehend what they are doing and be able to learn what we are experiencing in class."

A total of 10 students were randomly picked for prizes as well as eight teachers. More winners will be announced Friday. Some of the winners announced previously won tickets to the Egg Bowl.
