Kids pedal "smoothie bikes"

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) -  Saturday was 4-H day at the State Fair, and volunteers had lots of interactive experiments for kids and adults to take part in inside the Trade Mart. The activities included robotics, science, and health.

The Alcorn State University Extension Program brought out its pedal-powered smoothie makers. As young people pedal the stationary bike, they're mixing a smoothie attached to the back of the bike.

"We're wanting kids to do some healthy snacks. And this is a cool way to do it, get them interested, also getting up, getting active, being outside, playing, expending some energy," says Manola Erby, Youth Specialist with the Alcorn State University Extension Program.

United Healthcare provides a $40,000 grant to Mississippi 4-H to expand the partnership that engages young people through positive messages about nutrition and exercise.
