COPY-Special ed program to be revamped in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Complaints about the Jackson Public Schools' Office of Special Education have prompted district officials to put the jobs of more than 20 employees in limbo.

Interim Superintendent Jayne Sargent told The Clarion-Ledger (http://on.thec-l.com/zquZnt ) Tuesday she is restructuring the office and told the employees on Monday that their contracts may not be renewed for school year 2012-13.

Special education teachers are not included in the move.

Sargent says the state Department of Education has made numerous complaints of noncompliance and failure to follow monitoring plans for improvement.

She says details will be worked out this spring on how to better offer services for students with disabilities and how to improve the tracking of those students and related data.
