Rain may begin as light sleet, snow Monday morning

Posted: Updated:

Temperatures will drop rapidly through the 30s and upper 20s this evening, before clouds thicken and slow the cool down. By late tonight, temperatures may even rise a few degrees.

Our next weather maker is organizing to our west tonight and is already sending clouds our way. By 7-9am Monday, some patchy light precipitation may begin to fall from the clouds. As temperatures will be below freezing, this precipitation may make it down to the ground as some very light sleet and/or very light snow, mixed with rain. The most likely areas to see this happen are generally north of I-20.

Our ground temperatures are above freezing, so I'm not concerned about any snow or sleet causing travel problems or accumulation.  Temperatures through the lower atmosphere will warm above freezing by late morning, changing any frozen precipitation over to all liquid. The exception to this will be north of Highway 82, outside of our weather coverage area, where cold air may linger longer and keep the precipitation frozen through the afternoon. I mention this only so that you are aware in case you have travel plans into north Mississippi tomorrow. Our area will not experience any issues with the frozen precipitation and schools should operate on a normal schedule.

Rain will pick up in intensity and coverage through Monday night as the main core of our weather system moves through.

Rain chances will end Tuesday. We'll return to Spring-like temperatures the rest of the week.

Meteorologist Paul Williams will be tracking the precipitation Monday morning. You can watch him from 5-7am on the WLBT Morning show as well as during updates throughout the Today Show from 7-10am. You can also "like" my Facebook page for further weather updates.
