Airline computers back on line, ticket lines still long

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - US Airways computers came back on line at Charlotte Douglas International Airport just before 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

The airline is still experiencing flight delays and long lines at the ticket counter while operations are being restored. The average delay is about an hour, according to a US Airways spokesperson in Charlotte.

Calls and e-mails about the computer outage began coming into WBTV shortly after 9:00 a.m. Sunday.

The airline released a statement shortly after 10:00 A.M. explaining that US Airways was experiencing a computer outage at its hub at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

"Customers traveling to and from Charlotte, N.C. today, Sunday, June 19, should expect delays and longer than usual lines at the ticket counter. We encourage our customers to check their flight status before arriving at the airport by visiting www.usairways.com or calling US Airways Reservations at 1-800-428-4322 for more information and updates throughout the morning. Customers are also encouraged to check in online and print their boarding passes from home before traveling today to avoid further wait times."

A US Airways spokeswoman added that the computer problem was limited to Charlotte Douglas International. She could not say whether or not the computer outage was related to storms that passed through the Charlotte area Saturday afternoon.

US Airways experienced a system wide computer outage on June 10. The airline said that was caused by a power outage at an airline data center in Arizona. It took more than a day for operations to return to normal then.
