HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation has declined to install a traffic signal at an intersection in the town of Walls where two people have been killed.
The Commercial Appeal reports that in a letter dated last week, MDOT district engineer Richard Allen says a signal would not improve safety at the intersection on U.S. Highway 61 in western DeSoto County.
Bill Russell, president of the county Board of Supervisors, says MDOT's decision was based entirely on traffic count, and there are many more factors involved.
Russell says local leaders would work with lawmakers and pursue other courses if necessary to get something done.
Officials say there have been two deaths and at least 16 incidents at the intersection in the last five years.
