3 On Your Side: Road repaving cut short?

MADISON COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Louis Ladner has waited 17 years to see indications that North Old Canton Road, the road he lives on, will be repaved. This week a sign was erected, and spray painted markings are finally visible. "Marking mileage, footage, then marking places they're gonna dig out," he says.

But he says those markings are stopping short. He says county supervisors told him the repaving on North Old Canton Road would stretch from the Highway 51 intersection down to the Yandell Road intersection.

But he only sees markings from the Highway 51 intersection down to the Sowell Road intersection. That would leave at least a mile unpaved.

And Ladner says the unmarked portions of North Old Canton Road are the most treacherous portions. "Deplorable. Dangerous. Ruts in it where the trucks have run down the pavement. It's 3, 4, 6 inches deep," he says. "The bridges were improperly surfaced. You go over the bridge. If you're doing the speed limit you will come up out of your seat of your vehicle."

Ladner says traffic has increased dramatically on North Old Canton Road since the Nissan plant came along. The cracks and dips are proof that there's extra stress on the road.  3 On Your Side found most cars heading south on Old Canton were driving in the middle of the road to avoid the ruts.

It's not difficult to figure out why. There are a few gaping potholes that could cause damage to your vehicle.

3 On Your Side talked to District 4 Supervisor Karl Banks. He says federal cash is being siphoned through M-DOT to pave the road. The job has not yet gone out for bids. Banks says the paving will stretch down to Yandell road.

But Ladner says he has to see it to believe it.

Banks advised us to call County Engineer Rudy Warnock to find out when the repaving would start, but he could not be reached Friday.
