MIDLAND, TX (NBC) - There has been an increase in the number of women in west Texas signing up for firearm classes.

Whether it's to face their fear of guns, or just have peace of mind in knowing they can protect themselves, more women are picking up handguns and learning the basic skills needed for protection.

"I frequently travel a lot for work in remote places, and it's a safety issue being in those areas," said Sue Ferguson, who's taking a pistol handling class in Midland, Texas.

The instructor notes a bump in local women signing up for basic handgun classes.

"We have women who are active in church, nurses, and even stay at home moms. Last week I had a class of ten and four of them were women," says handgun instructor Tom Vannaman.

Sue Ferguson says she never imagined owning a gun, but after her first initial shots she knew that taking handgun classes was something she really needed to do.

"As you take the course and learn the proper way to handle guns it builds confidence and begin to get more comfortable with it and feel safer." "If people want to protect themselves...they have to do it themselves. Ladies are extremely good with handling it, they do very well," notes instructor Vannaman.

For many women, pulling the trigger is becoming more common.

"I think it's great, I think as many women should learn even if it is just to how to handle a gun," added Vannaman.
