JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Some needy Jacksonians will have Christmas dinner on the table this year, thanks to an annual food drive.

Around 750 elderly residents packed the VFW on Sunray Drive Tuesday to pick up bags of food, along with a hen or turkey.

The Craig Bluntson Senior Citizen Food Drive relies on community donations and dozens of volunteers to make giveaways like this one a success for over 30 years.

Ward 4 Councilman Frank Bluntson said the need among Jackson elderly is tremendous.

"One lady told me last year or the year before last... if she had not been given a basket like we're giving today, she would have had nothing but back fat and grits for Christmas," he said. "We don't want that to happen in the city of Jackson."

The Hinds County Sheriff's Department provided help from inmates, who carried the bags of food out for recipients.
