Viking Classic postponed again

MADISON, MS (WLBT) - The first round of the Viking Classic has been postponed again. The course at Annandale is not playable for the second straight day.

The 72-hole tournament was supposed to get underway Thursday, but the weather has forced two postponements.

The forecast calls for severe thunderstorms, with a 90-percent chance of rain as a cold front moves through the area.

The Annandale Golf Club course is already saturated after two months of steady rain. Golfers reported standing water on the course Thursday and large areas of mud.

"This is what they do for a living, this is not fun and games to them," said Randy Watkins, tournament director, of the mood amongst golfers. "This is their job. They want to work. They want us to allow them to work. But they want us to allow them to work when the conditions are fair, when it's playable, when it's a real competition. This is professional sports at its highest level."

Officials had hoped to start the tournament Friday and play through Monday, but it's unclear what they'll do now.

Military Day, originally set for Friday, has been rescheduled for Sunday. All other activities will continue as scheduled. That includes cooking demonstrations.
