Mississippi crops are in ruin

MISSISSIPPI (WLBT) - Crops are in ruin. Too much rain has fallen on Mississippi farm land. A conservative estimate by state officials puts crop losses in the range of $377 million dollars.

Statewide fields have turned to mud. Crops are basically rotting in the fields, workers are out of jobs. Loss reports are coming into the Department of Agriculture and Farm Service Agency in Jackson. The State Director Mike Sullivan said today, the situation is dire for farmers.

Some areas have received 12 to 15 inches above normal rainfall for October. Officials are preparing for a disaster declaration. If approved, it will offer producers emergency low interest loans and other assistance.
