MS Safe Schools Coalition holds conference

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Some Mississippi agencies are hoping to make sure schools are as safe as possible for gay students.

The Mississippi Safe Schools Coalition held a conference Saturday in Jackson. It addressed harassment of gay students and offered workshops promoting anti-bullying and non-discriminatory school policies.

The statewide conference drew about 80 participants. Organizers say harassment is widespread and can have tragic consequences.

"We know that this topic makes some people uncomfortable. We're not out here trying to change minds, but just to say that there are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered students in Mississippi. We exist and we need to have our rights respected and we need to be treated as any other student."

Organizers hope the annual conference will continue to grow. It began in Jackson last year.
