Pageant vets shine in second night of preliminaries

VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - This is the final night of preliminary competition at the Miss Mississippi pageant in Vicksburg. Last night there was a tie in swimwear and a first time contestant took top honors in talent.

In talent, Miss North Central Mississippi, Caitlyn Smith played her way to victory with a song by Liberace.

"Piano is something that i take very seriously. It's an outlet for stress and it's just a great way to communicate to others through an instrument" says Smith. 

And in swimwear, the annoucement there was a tie.

In this group there were a number of veterans. Miss Hattiesburg, Mary Brandon Norman, Miss University, Brooke Beard, Rachael Shannon, Miss Deep South, Miss New South, Anna Tadlock, Miss Mississippi State University, Sarah Beth James, and Miss Southern Magnolia, Kristen Benigno.

The winners, Anna Tadlock, Miss New South and Miss Hattiesburg, Mary Brandon Norman.

"My favorite color is yellow. It's the color of my car, it's the color of my bedroom, and I absolutely love the color, and I thought it was a bright one and I would actually wear it to the beach" says Norman.

"It was really great. I was not expecting that at all. So i was very shocked but very pleased at the same time" says Tadlock. 

Sam Haskill, the chair of the Miss America board of directors is in Vicksburg to promote his book, "Promises I Made My Mother." He will sign autographs and proceeds will go to scholarships for the Miss America Pageant.

Miss America 2009 won 50 thousand dollars in scholarship money.

The new Miss Mississippi will get a 10 thousand dollar scholarship.
