Preliminary winners hope for encore

VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - Judges are tallying the scores to name more winners at the Miss Mississippi Pageant at the Vicksburg Convention Center. Wednesday night's winners are hoping to hear their names again.

The talent competition had the audience on the edge of their seats. Danielle Smith, Miss Heartland is returning for a third year and has made the top ten and top five in 2007 and 2008.

Also from the top 10 in 2008, Corie Stanford,  Miss Dixie. But the night belonged to Miss Metro Jackson who is also returning for the third year. Katherine Barkett wowed the judges with a song from "Wicked".

"I just wanted to give it my all, you know. And I didn't want to leave anything on the table so I was proud of myself and when I finished I said its okay if I didn't win because I did my very best", Barkett said.

In swimwear, there were two preliminary winners from 2008. Crystal Flores, Miss Southland and Miss Riverland, Diana Strickland. Strickland who is a trainer won the swimwear preliminary.

"Just being able to impact people's lives. You know some people just, they come in they don't know. They just want a trainer. They want to know how to use the equipment. But I'm able to be more than that. I'm able to be a motivator, a coach and a friend" said Strickland.

Strickland says she is all about healthy living and hopes to team up with a local company to promote proper eating and exercise.

"I would love to be able to team up with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation that has a project,  Fit America Program that educates children in the school system about making healthier choices", Strickland said.

More contestants will take the walk down the runway Thursday night.  Miss Metro Jackson competes in evening wear, Miss Riverland in talent.
