VICKSBURG, MS (WLBT) - Two contestants took top honors at the Miss Mississippi Pageant at the Vicksburg Convention Center Wednesday night. Winners were announced in the first round for swimwear and talent, and history was also made in the evening wear competition.

It was a night filled with power paced performances with the production numbers and the contestants in talent. There were singers, dancers and musicians. But when the judges scores were tallied, third year contestant Katherine Barkett, Miss Metro Jackson, had her first preliminary win.

"I love singing and I love performing and to be on this awesome stage it was amazing to sing the song. I just tried to do my best and just gave it my all" said Barkett.

She only had ninety seconds to impress the judges. Barkett says it turned out to be just enough time.

"It's from the musical wicked. It's been my favorite musical since it came out and the words behind 'defying gravity' are so powerful" Barkett added.

In swimwear, Diana Strickland, Miss Riverland, was the winner.

"I have to say this is all about my platform 'Get Active Mississippi.' I have spent time in the gym working out my body because let's face it god has only blessed us with one so we must remain healthy and stay healthy so this is an awesome testimony" Strickland says.

Strickland says this was a sweet win because she had to overcome a last minute problem to compete.

"Earlier today I had an unexpected rash to come up on my skin from some lotion I used so I was extremely worried to be honest that I would not be able to come out here and have the confidence that I did tonight" Strickland adds.

There was also a bit of history Wednesday night in evening wear. For the first time a contestant wore a two piece evening gown.

We will have to wait to find out what the judges think. A winner is not announced in evening wear during the preliminary competition, but the contestants do get a score.

Tonight the competition continues with two more winners hoping to take this stroll down the runway.
