JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A candidate in the upcoming Jackson mayoral race announced his plans to bring about a more healthy Jackson.
At a news conference Tuesday, independent candidate Rick Whitlow outlined his "Healthy Jackson Initiative."
If elected, Whitlow says one of his top priorities is raising awareness about cancer.
Last October, Whitlow was diagnosed with a medium grade prostate cancer.
Whitlow underwent surgery and is now cancer free.
As part of his initiative, he plans to work closely with the healthcare industry.
"When I get elected mayor, I want to raise the awareness of this cancer situation as part of my healthy Jackson initiative. I plan on working very closely with organizations like the American Cancer Society. I want to be involved in screenings," said Whitlow.
His other priorities include crime reduction, economic development, and education.
