Former Police Chief will appeal his sentence

LUMBERTON, MS (WLBT) - Former Lumberton Police Chief Maurice Hammond will be sentenced August 13th. But his attorney says he'll appeal Friday's verdict. That could send Hammond to prison for life.

His Katrina Fraud trial ended Friday in Gulfport with the federal court jury convicting Hammond on all eight counts-making a false claim, false statements, stealing, and wire fraud.

Investigators said Hammond pocketed $19,000 in disaster assistance for a house he claimed was his primary residence during Hurricane Katrina.

But prosecutors said the house in Poplarville had no utilities nor mail service during that time.
