JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Former Bodyguards reflect on Mayor Frank Melton.
Marcus Wright says his relationship with Mayor Frank Melton was more than just business.
As his former bodyguards, Wright and Michael Recio spent hours, even days with Melton, and gained a deep friendship.
On February 10th, Wright would take the stand in federal court to testify against his friend in a case involving the destruction of a duplex.
The case against Melton and Recio ended in a hung jury, and Melton would not live to see a re-trial.
But just a week before his death, Wright says Melton called him and made peace with him.
Wright, who declined an on camera interview, told WLBT "His last words that I will never forget were 'Marcus, you were always good to me, and I will never forget that, I love you like a brother."
Melton's former attorney John Reeves says that's a testament to Mayor Melton's character.
Frank Melton still talked to Marcus Wright like he was a brother and said 'I love you man, I don't hold any grudges. You're a good man. I love you.' I think that just speaks volumes about the character of Frank Melton," John Reeves said.
Former bodyguard Michael Recio issued this statement: "Mayor Melton always looked after others before himself. If someone needed their light bill paid or needed groceries he would help them out. He will be sorely missed."
