Former Jackson mayor makes runoff

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - When it came to Jackson's primary race for mayor, there were lots of undecided voters, no clear cut favorites and in the end a true horse race between two candidates.

Former 2 term mayor Harvey Johnson and city councilman Marshand Crisler head into the May 19th runoff.

The party began in a north Jackson parking lot, but then rain moved in and put a damper on the celebration.

Harvey Johnson supporters packed a small room to cheer their candidate on.

In the backrooms, those who have been leading the charge to city hall watched the numbers pour in as well.

Then word Mayor Frank Melton was hospitalized. Prayers were offered.

"As we celebrate please let's keep Mayor Melton and his family in our prayers" said Johnson.

Around 10:00 Tuesday night the former two-term mayor emerged to claim a spot in the runoff.

"We need to make sure we have someone who can hit the ground running, make sure we have someone with integrity, know-how, the good judgement, experience, qualifications, skills to move this city forward," Johnson said.

Johnson said he will reflect on the past, his successes and mistakes in his bid to regain the mayor's office.

Up to this point his campaign has been relatively low keyed.

He trailed Marshand Crisler in fundraising, and plans to intensify his campaign efforts right down to the runoff wire.
