JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Morning anchor Wilson Stribling has said farewell to the anchor desk as he steps into his new role as WLBT's Assistant News Director.
He was actually promoted to the job more than a year ago, but the search for his replacement has not been quick. After fielding applicants from all over the country, WLBT found the best candidate right here at home.
Katina Rankin, a native of Magee, brings a wealth of experience to WLBT. She started her career as an intern at the station before being hired to work behind the scenes. She spent several years as evening anchor and reporter at WAPT before moving north to Durham, North Carolina. She now joins Wendy Suares and Paul Williams each morning on WLBT from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m.
Here's what Wilson said as he passed the baton during his final morning broadcast:
We are making some changes here on the morning news. Just over a year ago, station management promoted me to Assistant News Director. After more than a decade on the morning shift, it was a humbling vote of confidence -- but I can't help run the newsroom -- and anchor the news -- at the same time. So I'll be leaving this desk after today. It's hard to believe it's been more than 11 years since I came to WLBT. In that time, I've gone from single 20-something to married father of two, with another coming in September. And it feels like you've been with me all along the way. Ever since April Fool's Day of last year, we've been looking for someone new to sit here each morning. We've sorted through applicants from all over the country -- only to find our best candidate right here at home. She started her career here at Channel 3 as an intern, then anchored the evening news at another Jackson station before moving to bigger markets. We are delighted to welcome Katina Rankin to the WLBT morning team.
