JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Faye Peterson announced Friday morning she's dropping out of the race for Jackson Mayor. Peterson says she dropped out because she wants to spend more time with her children.

The former Hinds County District Attorney is now endorsing mayoral candidate Harvey Johnson. She worked with him during her time as D-A.

Peterson says she is endorsing Johnson because she is concerned about the city's budget.

"The next mayor is going to have to immediately know what to do to get Jackson back on track, to get this community financially stable" says Peterson.

"We're looking forward to being victorious. I can't say enough about my respect for her as a public servant and as a parent" says Johnson.

Peterson says she may consider holding public office after both her children finish high school.

Johnson faces nine other Democrats, including incumbent mayor Frank Melton, in the May 5th primary.

The general election is june 2nd.
