MEMPHIS, TN (WLBT) - Saturday marked the 41st anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King was assassinated in Memphis back in 1968.
The 39-year-old civil rights leader was shot while standing on the balcony of his room at the Lorraine Motel. A sniper's bullet struck him in the jaw and severed his spinal cord.
King, who preached non-violent resistance, was in Memphis to support striking city sanitation workers. An investigation led to the arrest and conviction of escaped convict James Earl Ray, who died in prison in 1998.
King's birthday is now a federal holiday, and the Lorraine Motel has been remodeled into a National Civil Rights Museum.
