Body found in Pearl River

COPIAH COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - The Copiah County Sheriff's Department is investigating the discovery of a body found floating in the Pearl River.

The body was found by a fisherman just north of Highway 28, near Georgetown, around mid-morning. The Crystal Springs Dive Team was called in to help pull the body from the water.

Investigators say the body is that of a middle aged black male, and was badly decomposed. His identity is not known at this time.

"The Sheriff of Simpson County is here with me. He has no one missing, in his county that he knows of, neither do we here. Were gonna be checking in Jackson and surrounding areas about missing persons. We'll know more after autopsy and dental record comparisons if we get some" said Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones.

The body will be taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy.

Sheriff Jones says the river is at a high level, and the current is pretty fast, which means the body could have floated for a great distance, before it was discovered.
