PEARL, MS (WLBT) - "It sounded like a car exploded, when I looked over there, I saw fireworks, all in the sky. It was a huge explosion, like bright bright blue," said Theresa White, who was driving to work when a transformer blew out on Interstate 20, knocking high voltage power lines across both sides of I-20- and barely missing her car.
"The wires were just bouncing up and down off the interstate, I thought it was going to hit my car. Thank goodness to the Lord Jesus it didn't," said White. "Behind me was an 18-wheeler, and I thought it was going to get him, but it didn't. And it looked like everybody stopped after that."
Officials shut down all lanes of the interstate while they clean up the lines. Entergy officials can't cut the line, so they have to build temporary poles from scratch. It could be 7pm before authorities are able to reopen the interstate.
Truck driver Bronson Gale was scheduled to make a stop at Fed-Ex just a mile up the road.
"Can't do nothing but wait," smiled Gale from his truck.
"Just another day on the road," commented Rex Arnold, a driver for Creek Carrying Corporation.
Over 14,000 homes and business went dark just after 7:00 a.m. throughout much of Rankin County, but power was restored by 8:30 am.
With downed power lines and a massive traffic mess, no major morning injuries were reported.
Entergy officials are still investigating what caused the transformer to blow out.
Over 14, 000 home lost power.
