    Most of us have heard of the Boys and Girls Club. They've been in the Jackson area since 1936, but you may not realize how big a role they play in Taking Back Our Neighborhoods. There are two in Jackson and to say they make a difference in those communities is an understatement.

    The battle against eyesores in the capital city continues in our Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report. The City of Jackson has added 24 more private properties to its clean up list. And city officials promise there are more to come.

    There's more progress to tell you about when it comes to Taking Back Our Neighborhoods. Remember Garden Circle off Englewood Street in West Jackson? It was not a place you'd want to live near or even drive through unless you were dumping trash illegally.

    The City of Jackson continues its battle with eyesores and now 49 more private properties are set for city clean up. On the list is 531 West Capitol Street. It is the church that once housed Voice of Calvary Ministries and it appears demolition work is already underway.

    In October, I checked out a complaint about an eyesore in downtown Jackson. A Pearl resident complained that the old LeFleur Cadillac dealership building on 318 South State Street is riddled with broken glass and trash. It's also frequently occupied by the homeless.

    A new shop in west Jackson has opened just in time for the holiday season. It's located on 531 West Capitol Street. What's so special about this store, you may ask? The owners aren't in it just for profit. The shop is part of a bigger plan to take back the neighborhood and minister to a community in need.

    The house next door is a burned out shell. It's also a magnet for everything bad. This house is located on 2826 Milton Drive in south Jackson and the family living next door called 3 On Your Side to help get something done about it.     If you want to take back your neighborhood, first, you have to appreciate it enough to do it yourself. That's the philosophy of a new group in south Jackson. They targeted Shady Lane Drive Saturday, zeroing in on 2114 Shady Lane Drive.

    Monday's Taking Back Our Neighborhoods report took 3 On Your Side to two Jackson locations; 1373 Winterview Drive in north Jackson, where neighbors reported an eyesore a year ago and south State Street in downtown Jackson where a viewer called to complain about an abandoned car dealership building.

    Taking Back Our Neighborhoods went back to a Clinton subdivision where residents are battling enormous sinkholes because of drainage problems. After our last report, a Trailwood Drive resident let us know the ditch beside his house is caving in and eating away his property.

    With rain in the forecast, some Clinton residents are nervous. There's good reason for that since their property is eroding and homes have been flooded more than once because of poor drainage. The problem areas are on Pebble Lane in the Trailwood subdivision and Cowles Creek Road in the Bruenberg subdivision.

    Residents of a West Jackson community are fed up with the continual deterioration of their neighborhood.  They called a host of city and county officials to the Triumph Village Church on Queen Mary Lane to see first hand the blight folks who live in the Queens-Magnolia Terrace community face each day.

    Monday's taking back our neighborhoods report took us to Latimer Avenue. There are two abandoned houses, 2621 and 2623, choked with weeds and boarded up. A woman who lives in a house nearby called 3 On Your Side for help getting something done about the eyesores.

    Paul Berlin made 3 On Your Side aware of the abandoned Creekside Carwash on Terry Road July 7. People had started using the property like a trash dump. It was littered with unsightly debris with free access.

    Taking Back Our Neighborhoods was in Yazoo City where residents of an historic neighborhood are at wits end over a couple of run-down houses. They are side-by-side on East Broadway Street and neighbors claim the houses have become magnets for illicit activity.

    More often than not, it's the church that takes a leadership role in addressing some of the problems of a neighborhood. The members of New Testament Missionary Baptist Church have undertaken in the Georgetown Community of Jackson. In fact, the theme of a festival planned for Saturday is "Taking Back Our Community".

    Earlier in April, we told you about a church on Deer Park Street plagued by a row of abandoned duplexes. The owner of that property has promised to clean it up, but he also wants you to know that he is making positive contributions to the community. He says his efforts have already helped take back neighborhoods like Pleasant Oaks Apartments on 1225 Bailey Avenue.

     A south Jackson man called Three On Your Side for help with a flooding problem in his backyard after he says he wasn't getting help from the City of Jackson. The house is located on 1161 Primrose Street and after our stories aired in January and February, the city took action. But the owner says the action taken by the city, just made things worse.

    In an area of Jackson from Woodrow Wilson to Fortification and West Street to Mill Street, better known as midtown Jackson, there is a group of people who are letting their actions speak louder than their words when it comes to taking back their neighborhood.

    The Hinds County Sheriff's Department has been conducting a series of sweeps targeting prostitution in and around the Jackson area. Investigators say those sting operations have produced arrests for other, more serious crimes and they point to WLBT's Taking Back Our Neighborhood series of reports as one of the reasons for their success.
