JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Mardi Gras got off to an early start in Jackson Saturday night and it was all for a charitable cause.

The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi held it's 25th annual Bacchus Ball at the Country Club of Jackson. The event featured a silent auction, New Orleans style food, and live music.

Party-goers placed bids on artwork, fine jewelry, and other luxury items. Proceeds from the event will go towards diabetes research and programs.

"Mississippi leads the nation in diabetes with over 350,000 people living with the disease. We're the only diabetes organization that actually cares for all Mississippians from our children to our seniors so money goes into our patient assistance fund, it goes into education which is empowerment for people who live with this disease," said Mary Fortune Vice President of Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.

The Bacchus Ball is one of the many fund raisers the foundation has throughout the year.
