RANKIN COUNTY, MS (WLBT) - Dr. Steven Hayne, the man who performed most of Mississippi's autopsies for 20 years, has filed a defamation lawsuit against The Innocence Project.
The suit was filed Tuesday in Rankin County Circuit Court.
As WLBT first reported, Hayne was terminated by the state in August as a designated pathologist.
Hayne's attorney, Dale Danks, tells WLBT the embattled doctor is seeking damages for defamation and other causes of action for "wild and vicious statements made against him"-by The Innocence Project.
Danks acknowledged The Innocence Project has done some good work but the non-profit group damaged Doctor Hayne's reputation by attempting to have his license revoked. That never happened.
Hayne had been accused of doing shoddy work causing innocent people to go to jail, but was exonerated of all claims.
