'Rapids on the Reservoir' Closing

Posted:

A fixture at the Ross Barnett Reservoir since 1983 is closing.

Rapids on the Reservoir and its 25-acre site were sold to a Ridgeland real estate development company on Friday.

When Rapids opened 25 years ago it was the biggest thing around, according to president and chief operating officer Gary Bennett. Rapids is also the Jackson metro area's only water park.

Bennett says more than two million people and countless children have visited the park. He says it is hard to turn over the keys to his business.

"It is a sad time," he said. "Prices have gone up, (and) we have a competitive situation in Philadelphia that's hurt us a lot." Bennett was referring to the Geyser Falls water park at the Pearl River Resort.

"One of the big problems," Bennett added, "is going back to school early. You know we don't have a May and August anymore. All the tourism in the state is affected by that."

Bennett says those who bought season passes will get full refunds.
