Tornado Hits Caledonia School; Student Injured

In Lowdnes County at least 11 people were injured by a possible tornado Thursday.

Two have been hospitalized with injuries that don't appear to be life threatening.

Cindy Lawrence, the Columbus-Lowndes County Emergency Management Director says local churches have opened shelters for residents whose homes were destroyed.  

25 homes and 1 business were destroyed in Lowdnes County, at least five businesses sustained damage, 81 homes were damaged in the storm according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.  

Some of that damage was reported in the Caledonia school district. Children huddled in hallways when the storm came through. The elementary, middle and high schools are all on the same campus.

The high school football field was destroyed, along with the old gym. Officials say the vo-tech building and several cars in the parking lot were also destroyed. A bus was thrown on top of the gym. One student suffered minor injuries.
