WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Free Legal Assistance for Katrina Victims

Free Legal Assistance for Katrina Victims

Hurricane Katrina victims who need an attorney's help but can't afford one are getting a break.

A team of legal committees from around the country and Hinds County are offering free legal advice. On Thursday they set up shop at the New Jerusalem Church on Raymond Road, and took walk-ins. They're helping hurricane victims with a number of issues, including FEMA benefits, insurance settlements, and housing problems.

"A lot of the legal aid offices on the coast were destroyed by the storm, so what we've done is put together a legal team to do triage on the ground to help individual victims of the hurricane who desperately need that legal assistance," says Trisha Williams with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights in Washington, DC.

If you missed the workshop, you can find out more about the Katrina legal assistance by calling 1-800-959-6752.
