Saturday is National Adoption Day and hundreds of foster and adoptive families celebrated at the Mississippi Ag Museum. The children and their families enjoyed a luncheon and program in their honor.
The Department of Human Services says 342 children are awaiting adoption. Of those, 156 are in need of permanent homes today. The event was held to acknowledge all participants and agencies involved in the process. Just Saturday morning a special mass adoption ceremony was held in Hinds County Chancery Court.
"Judge Owens was gracious enough to open the court. The Hinds County Sheriff's Department also came in and we had nine adoptions finalized this morning. It was just an amazing experience. Many of those families are here today," said Rickie Felder of Family and Children’s Services. WLBT is also celebrating 20 years of broadcasting Wednesday's Child.
Anchor Maggie Wade was recognized for her role in helping place Mississippi children with permanent families.
