Mississippians Help Iraqi Students

Thousands of school kids in Mississippi and Iraq will get cool new school supplies this year.

Trustmark Bank employees and members of First Baptist Church of Brandon gathered in the church auditorium Saturday to pack 8,000 backpacks with binders, planners, and folders. The supplies are decorated with cartoons encouraging children to make the right choices in life.

Victor Powell created the backpack goodies. Twenty two years ago Powell was in an accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Since then he's crusaded to send a positive message to young people.

“After doing a lot of prayer and brainstorming I came up with creating school supplies. This way at least five out of the week they will be able to see illustrations on some of the basic choices they have to make and so forth,” said Powell.

The backpack assembly is part of the 185th Family Readiness Group's "Mission Open Hearts Project" to help Iraqi children.
