WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Barbour weighs in on health care reform

Barbour weighs in on health care reform

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, DC (WLBT) - In Washington, Senate democrats unveiled their plan on healthcare reform.

The measure extends insurance to 94% of eligible Americans and cost $848 billion. But some issues are already generating heat: the measure would enact a medicare payroll tax on some and it would include a public option.

At the annual Republican governors conference, state leaders are already weighing in, including Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. They say the bill is a huge cost shift to the states and for most will mean a tax increase: the measure extends insurance to 94% of eligible Americans.

The governor says, "I announced my budget for the next fiscal year with a $715 million cut compared to the budget for this year. If I hate to have a $175-200 million that I have to pay for expanding medicaid then that's gonna be a tax increase on the people of Mississippi. There's no place to go for the money and that's true in state after state after state."

The first votes on the bill could come this weekend.
