WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Malcolm O. Harrison takes ceremonial oath

Malcolm O. Harrison takes ceremonial oath

Posted: Updated:

Jackson, MS (WLBT) - Malcolm O. Harrison took a ceremonial oath of office in the Hinds County courthouse today.

The courtroom was packed with family members and well-wishers.  Harrison was appointed by Governor Haley Barbour to fill the vacancy created when Judge Bobby Delaughter resigned.  He will serve the remainder of the term, which ends in January of 2011.

Before his appointment, Harrison spent the last ten years as the Hinds County prosecuting attorney.

“The law is what it is. The cases are out there. Our job is to interpret them to the best of our ability and that's what I plan to do. I don't plan to try to make up the law, I don't plan to go outside the law. I will read and interpret and follow the law", Harrison said.

Harrison was sworn in October 30th and began work last week.  So today's traditional investiture ceremony was strictly ceremonial.
