
JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Officials with the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence held their annual training day to address the needs of victims in domestic violence shelters.
The coaliton was founded in 1980 and their mission is to bring about social change through advocacy for victims, technical assistance for member shelters, and promote awareness within communities throughout Mississippi.
This advanced training session is for member shelter program directors and domestic violence shelter staff members.
"This is to help build there capacity to further serve victims of domestic violence and they are being trained in a variety of different ways to put policy into practice to affect true change for victims," said Anna Walker Crump, coalition executive director.
A representative with Heather's Tree presented the organization with a check from the 2nd Annual Heather Spencer Soulshine Memorial Concert. The concert was held last month to celebrate Spencer's life. Spencer was murder by her boyfriend in 2007.
Spencer's family and friends created the Heather's Tree to build awareness about domestic violence issues.
