JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A green jobs training program celebrated its first class of graduates Tuesday.
14 participants from 4 counties in Central Mississippi spent three weeks learning weatherization techniques at a LiUNA mobile training center in Jackson.
The new graduates plan to put their skills to work immediately. They were all offered jobs through the South Central Community Action Agency.
For most graduates, it is an entirely new field of work. "It's very exciting," said Harrisville resident Angela Dunn. "I've been in the food service industry for 14 years. This is very different for me."
Mendenhall resident David Wiley was an out of work truck driver when he heard about the program. "I try to stay informed, " he said. "I know these green jobs are definitely something that's going to be profitable for myself, my fellow graduates, and our families."
Similar programs are underway across the country, with the goal of putting people to work and lowering energy costs for homeowners.
