WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Mississippi farmers face serious crop losses

MISSISSIPPI (WLBT) - Many Mississippi farmers are facing a wash out for their crops this year.
State Agriculture Commissioner, Lester Spell says he's asking for help from the Secretary of Agriculture and Mississippi's Congressional delegation.
Catastrophic losses are being blamed on record rainfall in September and October.
Farmers are expecting very low discounted prices or a total crop loss for sweet potatoes, cotton, peanuts, soybeans, rice and corn.
Nearly half of the state's cotton crop is expected to be lost, and nearly 64 percent of the sweet potato crop valued at more than 39 million dollars.
Soybean producers are expected to lose 307 million dollars.
The losses could total about 485 million dollars.
