Jackson, MS (WLBT) - A "reserve champion" plaque in hand, Jennifer Newcomb of the Panola County 4-H reflects on the years she's been showing cattle at the state fair.

Now a teenager, 2009 marks the last year Newcomb can compete in the Junior Beef Breeding show, of which she's been a proud participant since age six.

"You take a lot of pride in what you do and what you've raised. And I as a person really enjoy it. I've met so many people through this from all over the state I'm still friends with," said Newcomb.

Many participants said they're learning about more than showing cattle; they're learning valuable life lessons.

"Responsibility and how to take care of something that you love," said 12-year-old Whitnie Thompson of the Pinola County 4-H.

In a barn nearby, youngsters were taking care of another kind of animal. They  washed and brushed hogs, prepping them for the Junior Market Hog Show.

"I wish I could get the pig straight and I want to put it in front of the judge so I could win," said 12-year-old Jason Jeronimo of the Copiah County 4-H.

But regardless of whether they win or lose, most participants will tell you they compete for one simple reason.

"I love animals," explained 10-year-old Ronnie Funchess of the Copiah County 4-H.

"It's a learning experience. The state fair's a good time for young people to come and how to kind of get experience showing because we don't have the volume of pigs at the state fair that we have at the Dixie National," said Mark Crenshaw, swine specialist for Mississippi State University.

Competitions will run throughout the week at the state fairgrounds. The fair ends October 18th. Tickets are $5 for anyone over the age of six. Entrance is free for anyone six and under.
