OXFORD, Miss. (WMC-TV) - A man is dead and his brother is in police custody following a hostage standoff Friday afternoon in an affluent neighborhood in Oxford, Mississippi.

Around 1:30, police responded to a call from the Grand Oaks subdivision, located about three miles southeast of the Ole Miss campus, where a man stood outside waving a handgun.

When officers arrived, they saw Bilethon Autrey in a garage. He fired at an officer, missing him, and ran inside the house.

A housekeeper ran outside and told police that Autrey had shot and killed his 50-year-old brother inside the house.

Eventually, the suspect surrendered and was placed in a police car with a blanket covering his head.

His father, Billy Autrey, who had been hiding in the attic, exited the house unharmed.

Investigators say they believe Bilethon Autrey was recently released from a mental health facility.
