Stewpot Services appeals for help

Hard times are taking a toll on the most charitable services for the poor and needy in Jackson. Stewpot feeds thousands weekly but now the shelves are running bare.

An appeal has gone out to anyone that can help restock and restore food supplies for those who need it the most.

Those down on their luck, those who have to make a choice between medicine, utilities or food lined up at Stewpot' pantry window.

"This helps to get them through that part of the month where they don't have money,." according to Reverend Frank Spencer, the Executive Director.

Four day supplies of canned goods and essential staples are parceled out to the masses.

"We will feed just in meals over 450 people today" Spencer added.

Volunteers try to provide for their requests. O

ne  woman said, "I come here when I run short on food, the assistance they provide comes in handy."

New faces come in daily. Most of the Christmas in July donations have been consumed. Now there is a dire need.

"We are desperately in need of food. Anything in particular you need? Protein is very important to us, that can be chicken, fish beef or pork."

Those who come here are grateful for a simple handout of Spam. But even that is running low.

Appreciative of Stewpot's efforts, they leave with plastic bags and hope it will get them through the lean times.

Stewpot Community Services tells me the economic downturn and rising food prices have contributed to the serious food shortage. Estimates indicate a 50% increase in the number of people turning to this free service.

Spencer is appealing to the community for donations of non-perishables, things like canned meat, flower, sugar, cereal, rice and soup.

If you can help call 601-353-2759.
