WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS: Settlement reached in paper mill explosion lawsuit

Settlement reached in paper mill explosion lawsuit

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - The International Paper plant in Vicksburg has reached a settlement with three workers severely burned in a boiler accident last year.

Brothers Kenny and Terry Townsend, and another worker, Cody Wendt, filed a Federal lawsuit against the company for the injuries they sustained in the May 2008 explosion.  They worked for a contractor completing work on boilers at the plant.  According to the lawsuit, gross negligence led to the explosion.

Terms of the settlement are confidential, but Billy Quinn, who represents the workers, says all parties are satisfied with the terms.

Quinn says despite the tragedy, International Paper has been a model of corporate responsibility since the accident occurred.

The explosion killed a fourth worker, Christopher Broome.
