LENA, MS (WLBT) - The plight of an 87 year old woman who lives near Lena has now been broadcast nationwide.
Ester Davis lives in a 160 year old shack that is literally falling down around her. There is one room that doesn't leak and she sleeps on part of an old couch. Her garden dried up in the summer heat.
WLBT first did a story on her July 29th and NBC picked it up. Contributions have come from as far away as California and Arizona.
The man who first called about her condition, James Crain, a retired off shore oil worker, who lives near her, says more than $9,500 has been raised for a new home for her. He says it will cost about $26,000 or $27,000 to build the house. Ms. Davis says God has told her she will be getting help and in her words, "God doesn't lie. What He says he will do, He will do. It may take some time, but He will do it. "
Crain says a man who owns a bulldozer has agreed to contribute his machine and his time to clear a spot for the new house, and another man has agreed to contribute a tin roof for the house.
