JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - A local family has a new place to live, thanks to Habitat for Humanity. It's part of the organization's most ambitious project to date.
Habitat dedicated a home to Mary McDaniels and her one-year-old daughter Tuesday night.
It's just one of an 18-home development in Jackson called Park View Place, which is across from Jaycee Park on Bailey Avenue. It's the first time the organization has created an entirely new housing development, and the project has transformed an area once known as a drug haven.
Every family who lives in the development helped build the houses, which are then sold at cost to low-income families.
"It's just a dream come true for me and my child to have a stable place to live," said McDaniels. "And it's amazing."
"This was some blighted, vacant property that a year ago," said Peggy Wall of Habitat for Humanity. "Who would have thought we'd have 18 houses and a beautiful neighborhood?"
Habitat for Humanity is just one home away from finishing the development. It should be completed by the end of the summer.
