Former Governor assumes duties as secretary of the navy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLBT) -Former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus takes the helm at the Department of Navy.  

A ceremony was held Thursday as Mabus assumed the duties at the new Secretary of the Navy in our nation's capital.  

 He will be working out of the Pentagon and be responsible for recruiting, training, and equipping the Navy and Marine Corps.  

Mabus was an early supporter of President Barack Obama.  

He is a former naval officer who served as Surface Warfare Officer on the USS Little Rock from 1970 to 1972.
