Jackson, MS (WLBT) - A midcity neighborhood in Jackson is transformed. Once considered the most dangerous street in the capital city, Wood Street is now a quiet cul-de-sac where the American dream has become a reality for more than a dozen families.
"We have started our last house. This is our 18th house in the 18 house cul-de-sac," said Habitat for Humanity / Metro Jackson Executive Director Cindy Griffin.
This pristine neighborhood on across from Jaycee Park is a far cry from what it looked like just 15 months ago.
"At that time the park was really surrounded by a lot of blight, decay over grown lots and it was obvious that it was a magnet for crime, that's when the dream got started," said Griffin.
After countless hours of volunteer labor and sweat equity from new home buyers Park View Place is almost complete. 18 families will call this home and many have already moved in.
"I was excited for me and my kids because I never thought that I could get a house," said Jessica Purnell.
The 26 year old mother of four pays for her the three bedroom home. It was not given to her. "It's very affordable, we don't have any problems. I pay it monthly and on time and it's affordable," said Purnell.
Those interested in becoming a Habitat home owner do have to meet some criteria. First there has to be a need. Home owners must meet these income guidelines according to the number of people in their family. Next, Gabitat is looking for hardworking people who can afford the roughly $275 monthly mortgage payments with 0% interest. Lastly, the family has to be willing to partner with Habitat to help build the home.
"We're definitely looking for good families who are wanting to partner with Habitat and have their dream of owning their own home," said Griffin.
