WASHINGTON, D.C. (WLBT) - The former governor of Mississippi, 60-year-old Ray Mabus, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to become the new secretary of the Navy.

He won unanimous confirmation Monday night.

Mabus is a former Naval officer, having served on the U.S.S. Little Rock as Surface Warfare Officer from 1970 to 1972.  He served as governor from 1988 to 1992.  He was also U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, under former President Bill Clinton.  Mabus is a graduate of the Naval Reserve Officers Training School program at Ole Miss. He has a law degree from Harvard.

His former chief of staff when he was governor, Jere Nash, says Mabus will make a great secretary of the Navy because he has a keen intellect.

"He knows how to say 'no,'" said Nash.

Nash also talked about Mabus having a very good sense of humor. Mabus could be sworn in at any time.

He was not available for comment Tuesday.
